You blink, and it is that time of the year when you need to renew Permesso di Soggiorno in Italy. Yes, time waits for none.
Before getting into details, I would like to begin this with an interesting story.
Once there lived this young greedy friend of mine, who found a magic lamp. When he cleaned it, there was a huge smoke, and there came a Genie.
Genie : Master, you released me from the lamp. I am your slave.
Friend : Wow, can you do all magics?
Genie : Yes, I am the most powerful Genie with a phenomenal cosmic power that allows me to grant any wishes, and transcend space and time. Do the impossible. In short, I am the Tom Cruise of this version of Mission Impossible.
Friend : Can you keep on granting me wishes?
Genie : Yes, of course. But one condition. The minute you are unable to make a wish, I will eat you. I hate being idle.
So, friend was happy. He kept asking beautiful clothes, luxury cars, food, etc etc. this went on for a while, and Genie kept fulfilling every wish of his. But, slowly my friend was exhausted.
He started to fear what will happen if he could not feed the Genie with next wishes. He checked with me.
I asked him to wish to know the number of Hair strands on his head. He responded saying, that is done, even the number of the sand particle on the beach is done. Now what?
I felt pity for him but gave a worthy idea. He went back happily and asked the wish to the Genie.
Genie went for it and that was the last. He never returned and my friend lived happily.
I know you are eager to know what was that wish, right?
He went to get nothing but a Permesso di Soggiorno from Italy!
Hahaha, I am not exaggerating. People who have been through this will agree with me cent percent!
No, Seldom you know that there are more to the show.
Welcome to Italy.

By the time you get used to the city and people, I am sure you will need to be ready to renew your Permesso di Soggiorno in Italy.
Welcome back to paperwork!
Oops, not just paperwork, but also the additional cost as I mentioned in the Cost of Living article.
The process to renew your Permesso di Soggiorno in Italy can be as easy as just filling in the form and submitting it to Post office, to a complex process of making multiple visits to the Questura, and with its own complexities each time.
The only thing you should have for this renewal is PATIENCE. And lots and lots of them.
Today, in this post, let us see all the details and tricks involved to renew the Permesso di Soggiorno in Italy successfully.
And before I begin, a word of caution.
Never ever compare the renewal procedures or the amount of time spent on it with your friends. Because, it greatly depends on the city you live in, which zone of the city you live in, which Comune you belong to, which Questura you report to, etc.
I know people who have got it with no hassle in just 3 weeks, to people who have been be
I personally have
In bocca al lupo. (Good luck!)
Do not delay to renew
Yes, never delay this work for another day. For, the administration already adds a significant amount of delay in the process, so you do not need to add any to it.
The first step is to identify a comfortable time to apply for the renewal. It could be 3 months in advance to 1 month in advance depending on the duration of your existing Permesso di Soggiorno validity. A thumb rule is to apply for it when you reach 60 days time before expiry.
The moment you see its time for renewal, just close your eyes and get going. Visit a post office and get the Permesso di Soggiorno kit.
This kit is provided free of cost by most post offices. My advice here is to be in the post-office early to beat the crowd. They do have a dedicated counter called “Sportello Amico” for business related to the Permesso di Soggiorno.
You may need to provide a supporting document that you are requesting the kit for your own renewal. If you are lucky, there are fair chances that you get a kit without questions asked.
The kit should contain the instruction sets, and also 2 forms called Modulo 1 and 2.
- Module 1 is for everyone who is above 14 years and expecting to get the Permesso di Soggiorno
- Modulo 2 is for someone who is the main / earning person of the family.
Documents needed for the Permesso di Soggiorno
The website from Questura do list all the documents required Permesso di Soggiorno, but unfortunately, it is only in the

Each application, who is above 14 years of age, should apply with a separate kit. Minors do not keep a separate kit, but will be attached to their parents kit.
For each of the applicant and their dependent make sure you keep the photocopy of the following documents:
- Current Permesso di Soggiorno
- Codice Fiscale
- Bollo of 16 Euro
- 4 recent photos
In addition to the above, the main applicant, or earning member should also include the photocopy of the following document to support his financial status.
- CUD / Proof of Income tax payment
- Last 3 months Payslip
- Modulo Unilav or work contract
These are the minimum documents required to submit with the kit for getting the appointment in Questura.
In addition to the above, there are also other documents which may
Stato do Famiglia
The Family Status or the Stato do Famiglia document is important when you are applying for yourself along with your family. You need to make your request for this document in your comune.
This document can be received from the Commune by making a request along with the Bollo of 16 Euro.
Marriage & Birth Certificates
In case you are adding your wife or kid to your renewal for the first time, be ready with the legalized document of their certificates.
Certificate of Idoneita Abitativa
What is this certificate about?
This is an important certificate when you are applying the renewal of the Permesso di Soggiorno in Italy for your family members who are under “Motivi di Famiglia” visa type.
Basically, this certificate confirms that you have a proper place to stay with good space, ventilation,
In my opinion, this document is the most complicated one. Why?
It is not sufficient to just have your contract of the home. To get this particular certificate, you need more documents from the owner of the property. Also, this needs certification from the electricity and gas companies as well.
This certificate is to certify that the house you stay is constructed and made available to live as per the plan approved by the Commune.
Once you collect all these documents, you need to apply for this certification in your Comune. Again along with 2 x 16 Euro Bollo.
And you will also need to pay a sum of around 100 Euro for the
If you thought the wait is over, you are mistaken.
Once the inspection is done, you have to wait for a confirmation from the Comune and you will have to receive a call confirming that your certificate is finally ready.
Additional Tip: This certificate should take around 2-3 months to receive. My recommendation is to submit your kit to the post office, while you wait for the certificate.
If you think you can apply and be ready with the document before the submission, sorry. These documents have a validity of 9 months. So, do not apply in front and waste the duration of validity.
I am sure you will get the fingerprint appointment much later than the receipt of this certificate. The current wait time in Milan is around 3-4 months for the fingerprint appointment. So plan accordingly.
Cost of Permesso di Soggiorno
- Macro da Bollo 16.00 €
- 30.00 € for sending the postal kit to Rome
- 70.46 €, for Permesso with validity more than 3 months to less than 1 year
- 80.46 €, for Permesso with validity more than 1 year to less than 2 years
- 130.46 €, for Permesso with unlimited validity (Carta di Soggiorno)
For each of the minors below 14 years, an additional 30,46 € has to be paid for the printing of the card.
Filling of the Modules
Filling of the forms could be sometime difficult if you are not familiar with the Italian language.
Let me give a short introduct
- Your personal details like Name, Surname, Address, and Passport details and Residential address.
- If you are working, you should give your Employer details & Earning details. This information you can find from your payslip or CUD.
If you are not comfortable in filling such forms, you can visit the CAF or ACLI near your place. You will find these places all over the city.
Offices like CAF/ACLI are available to help citizens or foreigners in most government-related activities like filing tax, applying for citizenship, renewing Permesso di Soggiorno
When you visit here, they collect your details and fill them into the computer themselves. So, there is no kit to be got from Post office. They print the module directly from their system and provide it to you for submission to P
There are additional benefits when you visit such places. Yes, they do the initial verification of the document and also help you understand if any document is missing. Especially when you
Once the Modules are ready, make sure you attach all the photocopy and documents along with the respective forms and submit them to the Post office.
Submit your application
You should make sure that you have affixed a stamp of 16 € Bollo to the forms. At the post office, you need to pay 30 € per kit as postal charges. And depending on the duration of renewal requested, you need to pay the fees.
You can also visit the questura site to know more about the fee details.
Once you submit your documents in the post office, you will rece
- A postal receipt or the acknowledgment with the tracking number.
- An appointment slip with the appointment date and time for the fingerprint.
- And the receipts for the payment of respective fees
The acknowledgment slip will act as a proof for your application for renewal of Permesso di Soggiorno and is the only document that makes you stay in Italy valid.
Visit to Questura
On the day of the appointment, visit the Questura with all the original documents along with the other members of the family. I would recommend to take your minor kids too.
The concerned police officer will inspect your original documents. Once all the verification of your document is completed, you will have to provide your fingerprint.
Make sure you have all the documents ready with you when you visit Questura for the first time including photos for all the applicants.
Else, this could be an unnecessary delay for someone are in urgent need of the Permesso di Soggiorno. Because each of such visits will further postpone your chance of getting the Permesso di Soggiorno in hand on time.
Wait is not yet over
If you ever thought that the waiting time is over now, you are mistaken.
Yes, there will be no clear instructions or visibility on how long does it take to get the Permesso di Soggiorno.
Remember the acknowledgment slip you received with a tracking number? Yes, you can use this and check for the status in the
You should get something like the a
In case you get a blank page or no status, please do make a visit to Questura and explain to them. Because, in most cases, there is an issue which has put your renewal on hold.
Unfortunately, there is no mechanism available to keep you updated when there is any problem in the process for want of some reason. The only solution is to wait, wait and follow up with the Questura office.
There are high chances for you to be sent back with a message that without the SMS you are not allowed in for the collection of Permesso di Soggiorno. But no other options. Keep trying.
There have been many examples where the process was on hold due to fees not paid or some other documents missing. But it’s unfortunate that in this world of the digital era there is no feedback mechanism that informs you about it.
Keep checking this above site until the day you see this.
No, do not jump to go to the Questura to get the Permesso. It is not yet there. It only says that you will be sent an SMS with details on when and where to go to collect it.
As I said, the only way to know the permit is ready to be collected is to wait for
Once your renewal process is completed and your permit is printed, you should receive an SMS with the date and time for the collection of the same.
But statistically, it’s around 2 months of waiting time after you complete your fingerprint appointments. If you do not get any response within this period, I would recommend you to make a visit to the Questura and follow up.
Congratulations! It is the Party time.
Declaration of Dimora Habituale
Once you are in possession of the Permesso di Soggiorno, by law you are supposed to register yourself to your Comune. This is to declare that you are still residing in the Comune.
I know several people how never do this. But knowing the Italian law and bureaucracy, I would recommend doing this without fail. Especially if you are looking to apply for the Italian passport at some point in time in the near future.
But this is the easiest of all the procedures you have seen so far. All you need to do is, visit the Comune and fill the below form.
Please make sure you bring your original Permesso di Soggiorno and also a photocopy of the same. There is no cost involved in this. You will be handed over a certificate that confirms that you have applied for this renewal of “Dimora Habituale” in the Comune.
Traveling without Permesso di Soggiorno
So, what happens if you want to travel outside Italy during this wait period?
As I mentioned before, the postal receipt is a legal document. So, you can travel anywhere inside Italy with this paper without any trouble.
In case you want to travel outside Italy, then it depends on where.
Meaning, if you are looking to travel across any of the EU countries in the Schengen area, then you can NOT travel. This holds true even if you want to make a transit in any airport in the EU area on the way to your home country.
It there are a specific reason for you to travel to other EU countries, say for example, for work, you need to apply and get a temporary permit from Questura.
This is nothing but the Permesso di Soggiorno, but on paper. The validity of this paper varies depending on the reason and justification you have provided during the application.
Ancora, in bocca al lupo! (Once again, good luck.)
