Welcome to this month’s post for the “Open Your Eyes” series.
In this section, I have been stressing the tag line of my blog – Its the journey that matter! Yes, we discussed the interesting places and facts about it.
What’s new in store for this month?
How about a stay in a home made of snow and ice? Interesting, isn’t it?
Well, it is true. This month we will look into the world’s coolest hotel, rightly names Ice Hotel.
Last month, during one of my travel to an Asian country, I came across a tit-bit in the in-flight magazine. It was talking about the Ice hotel. The very mention of the name made me curious and the result is this article.
The hotel that has a lifetime of 5 months a year, yet etches an everlasting memory in your lifetime. Yes, Ice Hotel, is born in December when the Torne river in Sweden freezes to ice.
Where is the Ice Hotel
Around 200km north of the Arctic Circle, is the world-famous Ice hotel. You may be wondering how did they manage to build this hotel with ice. Yes, you heard me right. World’s first hotel built on snow and ice!
Every year during the winter, the hotel is rebuilt by the world’s renowned artists using the natural ice from Torne River, one of Sweden’s national rivers and last untouched waters. And the hotel melts down and traces its way back to the river after the winter. Thus the hotel arises with a new artistic structure for every winter.
Thirty years back, the ice hotel started as an art gallery to be a winter attraction of Sweden, in Jukkasjärvi. The gallery was tactically names as ARTic. Slowly the gallery grew due to its popularity, and today stands the full-fledged rooms of the hotel built with ice.
The suites and rooms are built by a few hand-picked artists from all over the world. The temperature of the suite is maintained between -8 to -5 degrees. Do not worry, the mattress is made of wood and you are shielded from the cold using the special reindeer fur blanket they offer.
Want to take up the challenge? Get your sleeping bag ready!
Not just that, spend your evenings in the ice bar sipping the champagne out of the hand made ice glasses.
They also have a ceremony hall where weddings are arranged. Book your dates now, before the hall returns back to the Torne river in April.
How to Reach the Ice Hotel
Traveling to Icehotel is easy. You have trains and flights running regularly from Stockholm to Kiruna. Followed by a less than an hour of bus ride to reach Jukkasjärvi. If you are thinking to land in style, head to the London Heathrow airport, from where there are charter flights to Ice hotel.
Oh, and do remember to make the plan well ahead. With just one of its kind in the world, the Ice Hotel is sure to be booked fully in winter!
Hope you enjoyed this month’s series as much as I enjoyed writing.
See you with another interesting observation in the next month for my Open Your Eyes series. And you too, keep your eyes open during the travel!
Because it’s the Journey that matters!!!
