Before I begin this month Open Your Eyes series, I apologize for the delay. And I also promise that this month article would be more interesting, and astonishing.
Yes, we are going to discuss the possibility of travel to Mars! Probably the first blog to take you to Mars.
Surprised? Well, read on.
A few weeks back, I was waiting in the Catania Airport for boarding my flight to Milan. Whenever I fly to Catania, I have an unwritten rule from my daughter to buy Dolce (Sweets) from Nonna Vincenza. And I do not want to risk by going home empty-handed.
While I was doing the purchase, I noticed the kid in front of me proudly flashing a boarding pass from his mobile. Everybody in the airport does have a boarding pass. So, what is there to be proud?
Is he flying to a luxurious destination? Is he flying in some first class? Thinking all such possibilities, I just picked up a conversation with him. What he mentioned literally blew me away.
He had the boarding pass to MARS!!!
Yes, you heard me right. For a moment I was dreaming!
Flying to Mars means, you will get special training for traveling in Space. For a moment, I did not even want to think if lives are possible in Mars or not. Was feeling really proud of the kid that he has reached such a stage.
Here I was traveling between a few countries and excited to blog about them. What if I get a chance to fly to Mars? How many posts would I be writing to cover the experience of flying to Mars? Sigh, a typical Travel Blogger!
Then I came to know that it was not he traveling to Mars, but his name was. Yes, you heard me right.
Send Your Name To Mars
NASA has come up with a nice initiative of sending the names of the people to the planet Mars. A little google and I landed in the NASA’s announcement about this Send your name to MARS program.
The Microdevices Laboratory at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, will use an electron beam to stencil the submitted names onto a silicon chip with lines of text smaller than one-thousandth the width of a human hair (75 nanometers). At that size, more than a million names can be written on a single dime-size chip. The chip (or chips) will ride on the rover under a glass cover.
See, when the travel to Mars become a reality, you can reach there to find your names. Well, if you can read those nano-font size names on the chip though!
So how do you participate in this prestigious campaign?
It is very simple. Just head to NASA site, and register yourselves. Do not worry, it’s just about email address – no personal information is leaked to the aliens in Mars!!!
And here is mine and I am ready for the take off.
The rocket is scheduled to leave in July 2020 and timed to reach Mars on Feb 2021.
With the technology advancement we see every day, neither reaching Mars is far nor me writing about my experience in Mars.
Hopefully, I cover the experience in one of my near future Open Your Eyes series as well.
Good luck, and happy Mars-ing!!!
