First and foremost, thanks for all the support you gave me to my new “Open Your Eyes” series. The first post World of Futuristic Views has gone well with the readers.
Such appreciation helps and motivates me to write more on such articles.
The spark for this month series came during my travel to Munich. The theme of the In-Flight magazine was all about adventures. While I was browsing, there were many interesting articles. One that caught my attention was the news about the races.
Well, with spring fast approaching there are always marathons, bike race and other such activity happening in many cities of the world. In fact, I just did my 10KMs run in the StraMilano in Milan last week.
But the article was not about regular marathons on the road. It was talking about a near-vertical staircase in Barcelona in the Cursa Vertical Montserrat – about 2180 steps!!!
Once when I was in Malaysia, I have heard of Towerthon run on the KL Tower where you need to climb 2058 steps.
Interested to read about the Towerthon? Head to Menara KL Tower.
So when I saw the news about a run to the top of the tower, I was interested to know more about such event happening around the world. The result was this post – Thighs of Steel! How else can I name such a thing that can complete this run or the walk to the top?
When I started to search I was amazed by the number of events around the world similar to this.
So, I thought I will list out the top 3 marathons and here you go.
- Lotte world tower, Seoul
- AXA Towers, Syracuse, New York
- ICC Tower, Hongkong
- Menara KL Tower, Malaysia
- China world trade center, Beijing
Lotte World Tower, Seoul
Lotte World Tower, the world’s 5th tallest building is the one to be conquered by feet for winning the medal.
The tower is the only double-deck elevator that moves in 10m/sec. speed in Korea. The other double deck elevator I have seen is in Singapore Concourse building.
The running event is actually scheduled to be started in few days – April 6th.
The full climb consists of 2917 steps! Do you want to know the number of floors? Its 123 floors! Hahaha, I already see your eyes blinking in disbelief. No, I am not exaggerating and its a fact. Now, do you agree why I titled this post as Thighs of Steel?
You may think, why can’t I wait take some rest and continue to complete it? No, not allowed since anyone who climbs more than 2 hours are automatically disqualified.
What happens if the participants for some reason want to quit? Well, this you cannot rule out and for safety reason, they have a first-aid agent or safety person every 3rd floor.
I am sure you may not need this since the only stop you will make is on the 123 floor to collect your Medal, right?
One World Trade Center, New York
I am sure that none of us have forgotten the deadliest terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, on 9/11. There have been 1000s who lost their life. And there are also many who lost their lives in performing the heroic duty of saving the citizens.
Stephen Siller, an FDNY firefighter is one among those heroes. On September 11, 2001, Stephen Siller, who was assigned to Brooklyn’s Squad 1, had just finished his shift and was on his way to play golf with his brothers. He suddenly got word over his scanner that hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
Stephen drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers. There, he gave up his life while saving others. The event celebrates the life and sacrifice of all the 9/11 Heroes including Stephen.
Each year since 2015, the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation holds the Tunnel to Towers Tower Climb NYC at One World Observatory at One World Trade Center in New York City. One thousand participants climb 104 stories, symbolizing strength, hope and the resiliency of the American spirit.
Wanna know the total count of stairs? Its 2216 stairs. The view participants get from One World Observatory at the top of One World Trade Center is nothing short of spectacular.
Why not try to enjoy the spectacular views along with other participants? Get ready, its scheduled on June 2. Good luck.
ICC Tower, Hongkong
It seems the International Commerce Centre (ICC) tower was selected to host the vertical run in Hong Kong because it is currently the tallest building in the city with a 360-degree view of Hong Kong over Victoria Harbour.
The race or the marathon goes on for 2hours and 45 mins. You need to start from
Do you think you cannot make it on time? Do not worry, there is a fun category with more relaxed timing. Hey, when the goal is fun, why time it? Right?
Take your time, and get mesmerized by the view of Victoria Harbour from the 100th floor!
I am sure that by now you are all set and ready to start the preparation for on the above challenges. Good luck for acquiring your Thighs of Steel.
See you with another interesting observation in the next month for my Open Your Eyes series.
Because, it’s the Journey that matters!!!
