Welcome to this month’s post for the “Open Your Eyes” series.
In this section, we have been looking at the interesting facts and articles I have come across during my travels. While few of them were based on my reading magazines, few of them were the experience and interactions with the locals.
This month I am again going to talk about how worthy it would be to keep your ears open even when you are at the dinner table. Talking with locals has always been a rich source of information for my Open Your Eyes series.
There is much information that passes from generation to generation, and by word of mouth. Some of them are backed by strong history books, some are not. But as we all know, History is written by the winners. So, it will mostly be from their point of view. The more we explore, the more facts come out. For or against.
Anyway, today we are planning to look at one such hi-story.
Apple of the Earth
French have gifted many interesting things to the world. They even gifted the “Statue of Liberty” to America. But none of them had their name prefixed to it.
Interestingly, the name french has stuck to something that is not French!
Yes, I mean the French Fries!
I really wonder what would it be named if it was the product of France. Because, French did not even call the Potatoes as Potatoes, but called them the Apple of the earth. Earth Apple Fry? Jokes apart.
The origin of the French Fry dates back to Belgium around 1600. According to the local’s history, the villagers living in the Meuse Valley usually catch the fishes from the river and fried them to eat. During one of the months of winter, the river got frozen and hence there was no possibility to do fishing. And hence they missed the fried fishes.
And that is when the innovative mind of the locals turned to Potatoes. They started to slice it as long strips and fried it in the same way as they prepared the fish fry and started to eat them.
And that is how the potato fries came into existence.
You may wonder, if this was from Belgium why call it French Fry?
Hang on, will reveal the secret.
During the world war, American soldiers were stationed in Belgium. And this was the first time the American men tasted this potato fries. Since the official language during that time was French in Belgium, they named it as fries from the French or the French Fries.
And the name stuck to French Fry till today.
America, not only the people but also most of the products are from the other parts of the world. Be it Pizza, or the Fries, you see it is all promoted back to the world in American style.
Hope you enjoyed this month’s series and learned something new.
See you with another interesting observation in the next month for my Open Your Eyes series. And you too, keep your eyes open during the travel!
Because it’s the Journey that matters!!!
